Many Dayton homeowners don’t understand how hail can damage asphalt roof shingles. Many fail to have a damaged roof replaced before it starts to leaks. By that time it has already caused further damage and usually has ruined expensive interior work. From water spots on ceiling and down walls to destroying flooring this preventable issue turns into a home owner nightmare.
Usually when hail strikes an area homeowners may believe that they dodged a bullet if the roof isn’t leaking; however, they are mistakenly assuming that hail storm damage results in immediate roof leaks.
While in extremely severe hail storms it is possible for hail to cause enough damage that the roof begins to leak immediately, in the majority of cases a hail damaged roof will not show signs of damage right away. In extreme cases hail can split or crack asphalt shingles and allow water to seep through, but more common are less severe storms where the hail breaks off the ceramic granules that make up the surface of the shingle.
These little granules are critical to maintaining a strong roof. Beyond providing the color and texture of a shingle, they also protect the shingles from ultraviolet rays. Without these granules the shingles dry out and fail. In either case, a hail damaged roof will leak, but perhaps not for a few weeks or even several months. Either way, it’s important not to wait until your roof starts to leak before you have it checked out.
If you suspect that your roof has hail damage, have it inspected by an experienced roofing contractor. Hail damage can be difficult for a homeowner to detect, especially from the ground. A knowledgeable contractor will climb up on the roof and perform a thorough roof inspection.
